Luka Bloom

The seed for this video was sewn whilst filming Luka Bloom in DeBarras Folk Club, Clonakilty. After hearing the song during sound check we toyed with the idea of recording it that night. It seemed a bit crazy as we were only a 10-minute drive from the real Monks Lane, so we put our heads together and made a plan to film the following day before Luka left for Clare. Cobbling together a few microphones and using our socks as windshields, we recorded this performance in one fully live take in the garden, the following day. It was a wonderful experience to capture such a personal song in such a beautiful and apt location, as Luka explains eloquently below: “October 2016 my nephew Gavin and his beloved Michelle were married in Doolin. Gavin asked me to sing at the wedding. So I wrote this song, inspired by the gorgeous restaurant they run together in Timoleague, County Cork. We did this the morning after a great night in De Barras in Clonakilty.I was a bit knackered; wishing Sean would aim the camera more at the surroundings and less at me………” It was one of those magical West Cork Sundays, the sun was high and everyone was in great form […]

Sue Rynhart

“‘Foxed’ ventures into the folk-rock of Sandy Denny-era Fairport Convention, though Sue Rynhart’s improvisational flair sets her apart from that tradition.” – Ian Patterson, All About Jazz Preview by Bernard Clarke, Nova, RTÉ Lyric FM “An extraordinary voice. Sue Rynhart and Dan Bodwell both are very busy artists in a variety of genres and set ups but their duo Voice and Double Bass remains as stark as ever. Their sound will be familiar to people who know ‘Crossings’ her debut album but there’s an even greater intensity here on new work. There’s a particular aura here that’s difficult to pin down but these two have grown even closer musically together so that even subtle variations and tangential runs suggest whole worlds or unexplored areas within a piece, if you turn to a piece like ‘Foxed’ the programme note for this is simple if not unusual, it reads; ‘a vixen who becomes playful with a fox and quickly realises that she is way out of her depth and is viciously attacked’ but the treatment here is anything but simple. The subject matter more for the affairs of the heart than “Sue Rynhart and Dan Bodwell both are very busy artists in […]

” Australian duo Oh Pep! made a big impression at last year’s CMJ, and with their debut album Stadium Cake due out a month from today, they’re prepping to bring that remarkable live show to the rest of the US. Today we’re premiering director Chris Murphy’s ultra-fun video for their single “Doctor Doctor,” which shows two friends just simply having a great time together. With an instantly captivating synthscape, the track builds to a cathartic chorus that sees vocalist Olivia Hally repeatedly yelling “I know what I want, and it’s not what I need!” – Stereogum
