The seed for this video was sewn whilst filming Luka Bloom in DeBarras Folk Club, Clonakilty. After hearing the song during sound check we toyed with the idea of recording it that night. It seemed a bit crazy as we were only a 10-minute drive from the real Monks Lane, so we put our heads together and made a plan to film the following day before Luka left for Clare.
Cobbling together a few microphones and using our socks as windshields, we recorded this performance in one fully live take in the garden, the following day.
It was a wonderful experience to capture such a personal song in such a beautiful and apt location, as Luka explains eloquently below:
“October 2016 my nephew Gavin and his beloved Michelle were married in Doolin. Gavin asked me to sing at the wedding. So I wrote this song, inspired by the gorgeous restaurant they run together in Timoleague, County Cork. We did this the morning after a great night in De Barras in Clonakilty.I was a bit knackered; wishing Sean would aim the camera more at the surroundings and less at me………”
It was one of those magical West Cork Sundays, the sun was high and everyone was in great form here’s Luka’s take on West Cork:
“West Cork? Rebels. Mad fellas. Fellas in yachts. fellas in skinny boats winning olympic medals. Women knitting goat’s cheese in Ballydehob. Lads facing up to each other in Castletownbere. Buddhists pondering the infinite emptiness of everything in Garranes. Black pudding in Clon. Brown rice in Eyeries. West Cork is completely mental, and I absolutely love it.”
